The Dominican Republic is a country on the large island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean, sharing its border with Haiti and surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. You’ll find everything here in the Dominican Republic – mountain ranges, rainforests, swamps, desert, lakes, rivers, wildlife, and of course its’ well known and loved beautiful beaches stretching to over 1000 miles in total. The Dominican Republic is lush and tropical in nature, with temperatures reaching 34C at times.
Well-known for the luxurious all inclusive resorts on offer here, Dominican Republic holidays are very popular with UK holidaymakers, especially as a Winter sun destination between December and March (peak season). The hot sunshine, pristine sands, crystal clear waters, lively nightlife and relaxed way of life draw millions of tourists here every year. The Dominican people are very friendly and welcoming, their history influenced by many different cultures including African, Spanish and native American Indian. These influences can also be seen in the music, food, art, sports and religion when visiting the Dominican Republic.
Chill out on the popular Puerto Plata or Punta Cana beaches, the most popular stretches on the island, have a go at windsurfing or kitesurfing, or just relax and enjoy the sunshine. There are plenty of options available in the Dominican Republic if you’re looking for a bit of activity on holiday including mountain biking, diving, fishing, golf, whale watching (Jan-March), hiking, nature watching or even dancing. If you’re planning to visit during the month of February don’t miss out on the annual carnival here, held throughout the island until 27th February which is Dominican Independence Day. Semana Santa (holy week) also starts before Easter Sunday – during this time many locals take a holiday to the beaches and hotels, but some watersports are prohibited and some beaches closed during this time, making it a good time for UK holidaymakers to visit the cities instead.
Aside from the stunning beaches and hotels, if you venture from the beach Dominican Republic holidays also provide beautiful architecture, cultural history and a wealth of interesting heritage. The capital, Santo Domingo, has many museums, historic sites, architecture, music and art to explore whilst on holiday here. Visit the old Spanish Colonial Quarter or haggle with vendors in the markets for some shopping bargains or local jewellery pieces made from amber or turquoise. Other areas too offer a haven for cultural, historical and architectural finds.
